Lofoten Island Expedition by Sea 2023

Joe Cornish & Antony Spencer

The spectacular Lofoten Islands on the arctic coastline of Norway have for many years been a massive draw for landscape photographers, and in 2023 we will have the opportunity to see a side of this World Heritage Site seldom seen by others.

Using our home for this journey, the M.V Stockholm, we will explore areas otherwise inaccessible to regular travellers. The possibilities are endless with so many fjords tucked away we will be able to explore not only these but entire islands, that in the winter months are incredibly difficult to reach.

Our journey will begin and end in the beautiful Lofoten capital city of Svolvær. From here we will sail slowly west down along the coastline of many of the islands including Værøy, an island ordinarily almost impossible to reach in winter. From my experience over the last 12 years, March tends to be the snowiest month leaving the landscape a winter wonderland and incredibly photogenic. We have nine nights and ten days to explore both heading west and taking in different locations as we head back east to return to port.

We will, at times, visit the occasional well-known landscapes, but having such an enormous advantage of the ship, we will aim to capitalise on our opportunity to get away from the crowds and the icons to photograph new and unique locations as much as possible. We will, if the weather and atmosphere combine, attempt to be in these remote locations to photograph the auroras in the evenings also, providing yet more opportunities to make new and unique images from the islands. We will use our two zodiacs to make images and landings as often as we possibly can.

Whilst this is predominantly a landscape trip, there is a very good chance we will encounter whales such as orca and humpbacks, with the ship providing a unique opportunity to observe and photograph them.  When and if we are fortunate enough to get these wonderful encounters, we will aim to spend some time with these beautiful creatures.

In this part of the arctic, nature is in control. We will react to the weather in order to remain safe and put ourselves in the best locations photographically at the very best times. We may have to adapt our plans and itinerary at times due to this but Joe and I as well as the expedition crew will do everything we can to keep the group informed of the plans for each day.

A deposit of £2495 is required to secure a place on this voyage. A mid payment of 50% of the balance will be required five months before departure and the balance will be due just before three months prior to departure.

Please note- This will not be a strenuous tour but some small hikes and walks can and will be possible at times. These will likely be in wintry conditions and terrain. A moderate level of fitness will be required to get the best from this location. The price is based upon sharing rooms. Couples will be placed together in the same room and so will any groups if two unless specified otherwise. A single cabin can be booked by a solo traveller but will cost the same as two separate places onboard.
