To book, please choose from the following two options:
A small group tour exploring the varying landscapes of Arctic Scandinavia in mid winter during solar maximum to photograph aurora borealis.
Keeping the group to a maximum of six participants will allow total flexibility to capitalise of one of natures most spectacular phemona- Aurora Borealis. We will begin and end this journey at Kiruna airport in Northern Arctic Sweden. We will have no itinerary other than to get to clear skies and maximise our chances. Hotel bookings will be made in suitable locations where the weather is best. We will explore any areas the weather is suitable so could well photography in Norway, Sweden and Finland if conditions permit.
Kiruna in Sweden is often one of the clearest areas of Arctic Scandinavia in terms of cloud cover during the winter months. It is an ideal starting poiunt on this basis alone but is also withn 90 minutes of the borders of both Norway and Finland. The coastal mountain range along the coast of Norway is often a gelological feature that holds cloud, leaving one side or the other very often in clear skies. Whilst this may not always be the case, there is also the option to head East over to Finland and explore the frozen landscapes including the hugely photogenic frozen forests and ice sculpted trees.
Mid February is a wonderful time of the year in the arctic. The daylight hours are short but while the sun is above or close to the horizon, the light can be and often is, utterly spectacular for 8 hours straight at a time. Drive times will be kept to a minimum and will be broken up by stopping to capitalise on the beautiful winter wonderland as we travel.
Having spent over fifteen years now in the arctic exploring these regions I have built up a great knowledge of the locations, weather and hotels to make a flexible tour like this possible. It really is the very best way to maximise our chances of seeing very strong auroras during the peak of solar maximum.
Accommodation will be based on single occupancy (unless travelling as a couple,) Transportaion will be in a comfortable size vehicle for our group and accommodation standards will be high also.
Please note- A fast wideangle lens of at least f2.8 will be required and ideally faster. The terrain will be snow covered and slippery and a moderate level of fitness will be required to particiapte.
